Gilles Villeneuve - An F1 Legend Still Revered

Gilles Villeneuve’s was a unique talent was obvious from his very first Formula one test with McLaren. Gilles Villeneuve was still loved by many F1 fans. He excited the fans like other driver have done. For many people Villeneuve classic fight against Rene Arnoux in 1979 will be remembered as the greatest battle in F1 when he when he banged wheels and traded places with Rene Arnoux for second place.

Gilles Villeneuve was by today's standards of latercomer to F1, entering in the middle of the twenties. It was actually known that he raced a single GP for the McLaren before coming to Ferrari where he would see the remaining years. In 1979 he suffered a puncture in his left rear tyre that forces him out of the circuit.

Most of the driver would have seen this unrecoverable and abandonded, Villeneuve was stuck in the reverse making his way back to pits with the punctured tyre a huge shower of sparks created at the time he reached the pits.

Arnoux's quote after the race says: "The fight with Gilles Villeneuve is something that I will never forget. He says you can only race likes that, when you know, with someone you trust completely, and you do not meet many like him. I knew I had been beaten by the best driver in the world."
